Recent data shows that as of October 6, 2017, 87.3% of the beneficiaries under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) have seeded their Aadhaar numbers to MGNREGS. Of these beneficiaries seeded with Aadhaar, approximately 55% receive Aadhaar based payments. MGNREGS is one of the many schemes to have adopted digital payments, both with and without Aadhaar.
Analysing national data across schemes reveals that between September’15 to July’17, of the total funds disbursed electronically, the average percentage of funds disbursed through Aadhaar Payment Bridge System (APBS) has been less than 50%.
Such data highlights the need for more research and data to understand the role of Aadhaar in digital payments.
